Unscramble the Words in a Story

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Unscramble the Words in a Story" is written for 5th Grade (Ages 10-11), and it covers Common Core L.5.2.E. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and word scrambles never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this word scrambles worksheet?

⌄

Have your child read the clue first and guess the word before moving the letters. Cross out each letter as it is used. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Unscramble 8 words in a short story about a storm hike, like forest, shelter, lantern and journal. This story is made up, and some of its words are scrambled. To unscramble a word, put its letters back in order. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then, unscramble the letters under each line and write the word on that line. Check your word in the word bank. An answer key is included.

Can I use this word scrambles worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with word scrambles. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What does it mean to unscramble a word?

⌄

It means putting mixed up letters back in the right order to spell a real word, using every letter one time. The clue next to each set of letters tells what the word means.

Why do some pages have no word bank?

⌄

The tricky spelling and geography pages give only a definition, so the child must recall the word and spell it, like temperature for How hot or cold something is. The story and parts of speech pages are lighter: the story has a word bank and the sort page gives a meaning clue for each word.

How can I help when a scramble is hard?

⌄

Read the clue and say a few words that fit it. Then look for common endings like ture, ent or ate, and cross out each letter as you use it.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 4 word scramble sheets have an answer key, and the sort page key shows each word in its column.
