Trace and Write L Blend Picture Words

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Trace and Write L Blend Picture Words" is written for 1st Grade (Ages 6-7), and it covers Common Core RF.1.2.B. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on consonants, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and consonant blends never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this consonant blends worksheet?

⌄

Say each picture name together and stretch the first two sounds, or the last two on the ending blend pages, before your child writes. Check with the answer key and say any missed word again slowly.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Trace and copy 6 l blend picture words like clam, plum and glue, then circle the blend. A blend is two consonants whose sounds you hear together. Every blend on this page ends in l. The directions on the page read: Say each picture name. Trace the word on the Trace line. Then, copy it on the Copy line. Then, circle the blend in the word you traced. An answer key is included.

Can I use this consonant blends worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 1st Grade consonants, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with consonant blends. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a consonant blend?

⌄

A blend is two consonants side by side where you still hear both sounds, like f and r in frog or c and l in clap. Children say the two sounds together quickly.

What kinds of blends are on these pages?

⌄

L blends end in l, like bl, cl, fl, gl, pl and sl. R blends end in r, like br, cr, dr, fr, gr and tr. S blends start with s, like sn, sp, st, sw and sk. Ending blend pages add nd, st, mp, nt, nk, sk, lt and lk at the end of words like hand and milk.

How do I help my child read a blend word?

⌄

Say each sound slowly, then push them together: f, r, og becomes frog. Have your child say the picture name aloud before writing, and stretch the start if the blend is hard to hear.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 28 consonant blends sheets have an answer key.

What consonant skills do 1st graders learn?

⌄

They match consonant letters to sounds at the start and end of words, read blends where both sounds are heard, like st in stop (RF.1.2.B), and learn digraphs where two letters make one sound, like sh in ship (RF.1.3.A).

In what order should my child work through consonants?

⌄

Begin with single beginning and ending consonants, then l, r and s blends at the start of words, then ending blends like nd and mp. Digraphs such as sh and ch come next, with th, wh and ck after them.

How can I tell if my child hears an ending blend?

⌄

Ask your child to say the word slowly and stretch the end, as in nest. If only one sound comes out at the end, say the word together and tap a finger for each sound. The Circle the Ending Blend pages practice this with pictures like lamp and skunk.
