FAQ

How do I use this spelling crosswords worksheet?

⌄

Read the rule at the top together, then have your child say each word in the bank and point to the pattern. Fill the sure answers first and use the crossing letters for the rest. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Solve a crossword of 10 words where ph or gh spells the f sound, like dolphin, trophy and cough. The letters ph and gh can both spell the f sound. Every word in this puzzle has ph or gh. The directions on the page read: Read each Across and Down clue. Then, find the answer in the word bank and write it in the boxes that start at the clue's number, one letter in each box. An answer key is included.

Can I use this spelling crosswords worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with spelling crosswords. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a spelling crossword?

⌄

It is a crossword built from one spelling list. Each clue is a short definition, the child finds the word in the word bank and writes it in the numbered boxes, one letter in each box.

How do crosswords help 4th graders spell?

⌄

Where an Across word and a Down word cross, they share a letter, so one wrong letter shows up in the other word. Each puzzle sticks to one pattern, like ie and ei in neighbor and receive, so the child sees the pattern ten times (CCSS L.4.2.D).

Which spelling patterns do these crosswords cover?

⌄

Words ending in tion or sion, silent k, w, b, g or h, words ending in ous or ture, ie and ei words, ph and gh spelling the f sound, and the prefixes un, re, dis, mis and pre.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 6 spelling crosswords have an answer key with every box filled in.
