Guess What Is Inside the Book

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Guess What Is Inside the Book" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core RL.K.7. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on reading comprehension, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and predictions never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this predictions worksheet?

⌄

Read each story aloud slowly, then pause and ask what will happen next before your child looks at the pictures. Ask which words helped, and point back to them in the story. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Hear 3 book titles like Off to the Moon, then circle what you will see inside each book. The directions on the page read: An adult reads each book title aloud with the student. Then, circle the picture that shows what you will see inside the book. An answer key is included.

Can I use this predictions worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten reading comprehension, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with predictions. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a prediction for a kindergartner?

⌄

A prediction is a smart guess about what will happen next. When Pip the cat sees a ball of yarn and crouches low and wiggles, a child can guess that Pip will jump on the yarn.

Does my child need to read the stories?

⌄

No. Each page tells an adult to read the stories or book titles aloud. The child listens, circles a picture and tells why, so the skill practiced is thinking, not decoding.

How do I help my child explain a prediction?

⌄

Ask which words in the story helped. In Predict What Happens to the Seed and the Muffins, Mom puts on oven mitts and the timer goes beep, beep, so the muffins are ready to come out.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 6 predictions sheets have an answer key that rings the picture that fits the clues.
