Make Rhyming Words by Changing the First Letter
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Make Rhyming Words by Changing the First Letter" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core L.2.2.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on spelling, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and spell rhyming words never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this spell rhyming words worksheet?
⌄
Say each word aloud and have your child listen for the ending before writing. Cover the word bank at first and use it only when your child is stuck. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Change the first letters to climb from sock to block and from bug to plug in four rhyme boxes. Words rhyme when they end with the same sound. Change the f in fan to m, and you get man, a word that rhymes. The directions on the page read: Read the start word in each box. Follow each step to change the first letter or letters. Then, write the new word, which starts the next step. An answer key is included.
Can I use this spell rhyming words worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with spell rhyming words. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do rhyming words help with spelling?
⌄
Rhyming words often end with the same letters, so a child who can spell cake can spell bake and lake by changing the first letter. These pages ask for rhymes that end with the same letters.
What is a rhyming word ladder?
⌄
Children start with a word like light, change the first letter or letters as each step says and write the new word, which starts the next step. Light becomes night, then fright, then tight.
Can my child use the word bank?
⌄
Yes. On the two spell the rhymes pages the Word Bank is there for when your child is stuck, and the key accepts any real word that rhymes and ends with the same letters.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 6 spell rhyming words sheets have an answer key.
