Er, Ir and Ur Words in Sentences
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Er, Ir and Ur Words in Sentences" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RF.2.3.E. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on vowels, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and r-controlled vowels never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this r-controlled vowels worksheet?
⌄
Group the spellings that sound alike, such as or, ore and oar, and read them together. Encourage your child to read sentences aloud to check that the word fits. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Finish six sentences with er, ir and ur words like purple, thirsty and nurse from a word bank. An r-controlled vowel is a vowel followed by r, which changes its sound. Er, ir and ur sound alike, as in jerk, skirt and fur. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Find the word in the Word Bank that fits and write it on the line. Use each word once. An answer key is included.
Can I use this r-controlled vowels worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade vowels, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with r-controlled vowels. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Which bossy r spellings do 2nd graders learn?
⌄
Beyond ar, or, er, ir and ur, 2nd graders meet ore and oar, which sound like or, and air, are and ear, which make the sound in hair. These spellings are inconsistent, which is why they get extra practice (RF.2.3.E).
What do the bossy r picture pages ask?
⌄
Children look at a picture, like a shark or an acorn, circle the right spelling from choices such as shark, shork and sherk, then write the word. One page mixes ar, or, ir and ur, and the other is ar or or.
How do I help my child choose er, ir or ur?
⌄
All three sound the same, so the spelling has to be learned word by word. Sorting words into three columns, then reading each column aloud, helps the spellings stick. The review asks children to pick between choices like therd, thurd and third.
What is on the bossy r story page?
⌄
An original story about a girl on a stormy farm morning. Children underline sixteen words with ar, or, er, ir or ur, then sort them on page two and answer two questions in sentences.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 22 r-controlled vowel sheets have an answer key, including the story and the review.
