Use Context Clues in the Creaky Attic Story

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Use Context Clues in the Creaky Attic Story" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core L.3.4.A. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on comprehension exercises, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and context clues never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade reading worksheet: use context clues to find what creaky, dim, cautious, startled and relieved mean in an attic story. Answer key included. Part of our context clues comprehension exercises collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Begin with a shared reading or oral warm-up that highlights context clues so students hear and see the skill in context before practicing it independently. Have students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, especially for phonics-based tasks where saying an answer aloud first helps. After completing the worksheet, use one or two examples from the page to start a discussion: "Where else have you seen this in your reading?" These context clues worksheets are ideal for use during small group reading time, as independent center work, or as a homework activity.

What students will practice

  • Students will read a story about Mila searching Grandpa's attic, with the bold words creaky, dim, cautious, startled and relieved.
  • Students will use nearby clues, such as jumped back and gasped, to choose each meaning and copy the clue words.
  • Students will write their own sentence with one of the bold words.

FAQ

How do I use this context clues worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Use context clues to find what creaky, dim, cautious, startled and relieved mean in an attic story. Context clues are nearby words that help you figure out a new word. The directions on the page read: Read the text. Look closely at each word in bold. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: For 1 to 5, circle the letter of the meaning. Then, write the clue words from the text on the line. Then, write your own sentence for 6. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this context clues worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with context clues. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What kinds of context clues are there?

⌄

A clue can be a word that means the same thing, an example, or a sentence that explains the new word. In the arctic fox text, keeping the heat in explains insulate, and in the attic story, slowly and carefully explains cautious.

Why copy the clue words?

⌄

Copying the exact words shows where the meaning came from, so children check their choice against the text instead of guessing. The answer key lists the clue words for each bold word.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 4 context clues sheets have an answer key, with a sample sentence for the last question.
