How a Cat's Whiskers Sense the World, Read and Answer

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"How a Cat's Whiskers Sense the World, Read and Answer" is written for 4th Grade (Ages 9-10), and it covers NGSS 4-LS1-2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and senses never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this senses worksheet?

⌄

Before reading, have your child close their eyes and name sounds or smells around them. Ask which sense each animal relies on most. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how a cat's whiskers send touch messages to its brain, study the diagram and answer questions. A sense is a way an animal learns about the world, such as touch, sight or hearing. The directions on the page read: Read the passage and study the labeled diagram. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3. Then, write the answers to questions 4 to 6 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this senses worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 4th Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with senses. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do animals use their senses to survive?

⌄

Senses help animals find food, stay safe and find their way. A bat hears echoes to find insects in the dark, a rattlesnake senses the heat of a mouse, and a catfish tastes food in muddy water with its barbels.

What does 4-LS1-2 ask 4th graders to know?

⌄

It asks children to explain how animals take in information through their senses, process it in the brain and respond. Several sheets have students order the steps from sense to brain to action.

Why compare a dog's nose with a person's?

⌄

It shows how the same sense can be much stronger in one animal. A dog's nose takes in far more smells than ours, which is why dogs can track scents. Students fill in a chart to compare the two.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All ten senses sheets have an answer key.

How many 4th Grade senses worksheets are there?

⌄

10 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are senses worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 4th Grade students, roughly ages 9-10. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these senses worksheets aligned to NGSS?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
