How a Giant Anteater Eats Ants and Termites, Read and Answer

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"How a Giant Anteater Eats Ants and Termites, Read and Answer" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS4-3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and adaptations never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this adaptations worksheet?

⌄

Have your child name the animal's habitat first, then find the body part that helps it there. Each question names the paragraph to reread. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how a giant anteater with no teeth rips open termite mounds and walks on its knuckles, then answer. A termite is a small insect that lives in a big group and eats wood. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 to 6 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this adaptations worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with adaptations. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is an adaptation?

⌄

An adaptation is a body part or behavior that helps an animal survive where it lives. A woodpecker's strong, pointed beak chips holes in bark, and its long tongue with a sticky, barbed tip pulls out the insects hiding inside.

What is the difference between a structural and a behavioral adaptation?

⌄

A structural adaptation is a body part, like a giant anteater's strong front claws or a duck's webbed feet. A behavioral adaptation is something an animal does, like the anteater walking on its knuckles to keep those claws sharp. One sort page has children put adaptation cards into each group.

How do these sheets connect to 3rd grade science standards?

⌄

They support NGSS 3-LS4-3, which asks children to argue that in a given habitat some animals survive well, some less well and some not at all. On the compare page, a duck paddles across a pond with webbed feet, while a rooster scratches the farmyard for seeds and cannot swim like a duck.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 23 adaptations sheets have an answer key. The newest keys give a model answer, the paragraph to check and other answers the passage supports.
