A Mosquito's Life Cycle in Still Water, Order the Stages

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"A Mosquito's Life Cycle in Still Water, Order the Stages" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS1-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and animal life cycles never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this animal life cycles worksheet?

⌄

Read the passage together and point out the order words first, next, then, after that and finally. Have your child fill in the flow chart before the questions, then check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how mosquito larvae breathe through a tube in a birdbath and float as a pupa, then order stages. Still water is water that does not flow, like the water in a puddle. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page, fill in the flow chart and answer the questions. On page 2: Write the steps from the Step Bank in boxes 1 to 5 in order. Then, circle the letter of the best answer for question 6 and write the answers to questions 7 and 8 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this animal life cycles worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with animal life cycles. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is an animal life cycle?

⌄

It is the set of stages an animal goes through as it grows, ending when the adult has young of its own and the cycle starts again. A chicken goes from egg to chick to grown hen or rooster, and a grown hen can lay eggs of her own.

What is the difference between complete and incomplete metamorphosis?

⌄

Complete metamorphosis has four stages, egg, larva, pupa and adult, as in a ladybug, a beetle, a honeybee or a moth. Incomplete metamorphosis has three, egg, nymph and adult, as in a grasshopper, a cricket or a dragonfly. A nymph looks like a small adult with no wings.

How do the flow chart sheets work?

⌄

Children read a short passage, then write five steps from a step bank in order in a flow chart and answer three questions. On the salmon sheet, the steps run from eggs laid in gravel to grown salmon swimming back upstream to lay eggs of their own (NGSS 3-LS1-1).

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 10 animal life cycle sheets have an answer key.
