Why Musk Oxen Form a Circle, Read and Answer

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Why Musk Oxen Form a Circle, Read and Answer" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS2-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and animals in groups never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this animals in groups worksheet?

⌄

Talk about groups your child knows, like a team or a class, and what each person does, before reading. After each page, ask what would happen if an animal lived alone. Check answers with the key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read why musk oxen form a circle around their calves, study the diagram and answer questions. Some animals live in herds. Working together helps the herd survive. A predator is an animal that hunts other animals. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, study the labeled diagram. Use both to answer the questions on the next page. On page 2: Read each question. Circle the letter of the best answer, or write your answer on the lines. Use the passage and the diagram to help you. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this animals in groups worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with animals in groups. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

Why do some animals live in groups?

⌄

A group can find food, watch for danger and protect its young better than one animal alone. On these sheets, a meerkat guard gives an alarm call when it sees a hawk or a jackal, and musk oxen stand in a tight ring facing out so wolves cannot reach the calves.

What does 3-LS2-1 ask 3rd graders to do?

⌄

It asks children to argue from evidence that some animals form groups that help members survive. Each sheet gives a short passage and a diagram, and the questions ask children to point to the part that shows how the group helps.

What jobs do the animals have in each group?

⌄

Meerkats take turns as guards, babysitters, diggers and foragers. In a carpenter ant colony the queen lays eggs, and workers and soldiers share the other jobs. In a wolf pack, the mother and father lead, and the pack hunts and raises the pups together.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All four animals in groups sheets have an answer key.

How many 3rd Grade animals in groups worksheets are there?

⌄

4 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are animals in groups worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these animals in groups worksheets aligned to NGSS?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
