Camouflage in the Forest, Read and Answer

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Camouflage in the Forest, Read and Answer" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS4-3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and camouflage and mimicry never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this camouflage and mimicry worksheet?

⌄

Read the passage aloud together and look at the diagram before your child starts the questions. Each question names the paragraph that holds the answer, so show your child how to go back and check. On a walk, look for an insect or bird that matches its background.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read how four forest animals blend in with camouflage, study the diagram and answer questions. Camouflage is a color, pattern or shape that helps an animal blend in. A predator is an animal that hunts other animals. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, study the labeled diagram. Use both to answer the questions on the next page. On page 2: Read each question. Circle the letter of the best answer, or write your answer on the lines. Use the passage and the diagram to help you. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this camouflage and mimicry worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with camouflage and mimicry. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the difference between camouflage and mimicry?

⌄

Camouflage helps an animal blend in with the place around it, like a fawn whose spots look like patches of sunlight. Mimicry is when a harmless animal looks like a dangerous one, like a hoverfly with the yellow and black stripes of a wasp. Both help an animal stay safe from predators.

Why does a snowshoe hare change color?

⌄

Its fur turns white as the days get shorter in fall and brown again in spring, so it matches snow in winter and the forest floor in summer. The sheet has children put the four steps of the change in order and answer questions about the lynx that hunts it.

How do these sheets connect to 3rd grade science standards?

⌄

They support 3-LS4-2, which asks children to explain how differences in traits help some animals survive, and 3-LS4-3, which is about how well animals survive in a given habitat. A fawn on the forest floor or a white hare in the snow is easy for children to picture.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All three camouflage and mimicry sheets have an answer key.

How many 3rd Grade camouflage and mimicry worksheets are there?

⌄

3 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

What age are camouflage and mimicry worksheets for?

⌄

These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.

Are these camouflage and mimicry worksheets aligned to NGSS?

⌄

Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
