How a Stick Insect Hides in Plain Sight, Read and Answer
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"How a Stick Insect Hides in Plain Sight, Read and Answer" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS4-3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and camouflage and mimicry never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read how a stick insect sways like a twig in the wind and eats leaves at night to hide from birds. A twig is a little branch of a tree or bush. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Circle the letter of the best answer for questions 1 to 3, and write the answers to questions 4 to 6 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this camouflage and mimicry worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with camouflage and mimicry. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is the difference between camouflage and mimicry?
⌄
Camouflage helps an animal blend in with the place around it, like a fawn whose spots look like patches of sunlight. Mimicry is when a harmless animal looks like a dangerous one, like a hoverfly with the yellow and black stripes of a wasp. Both help an animal stay safe from predators.
How do a stick insect and a flounder hide?
⌄
A stick insect's long, thin body and legs look like twigs, and it sways in a breeze like a twig in the wind. A flounder lies flat on the sea floor, changes its color and pattern to match the sand and flicks sand over its back so only its eyes poke out.
How do these sheets connect to 3rd grade science standards?
⌄
They support 3-LS4-2, which asks children to explain how differences in traits help some animals survive, and 3-LS4-3, which is about how well animals survive in a given habitat. A white hare in the snow or a flounder on the sand is easy for children to picture.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 5 camouflage and mimicry sheets have an answer key.
