Bird Eggs and Reptile Eggs, Read and Compare

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Bird Eggs and Reptile Eggs, Read and Compare" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS1-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and comparing life cycles never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this comparing life cycles worksheet?

⌄

Read the passage, then fill in one row of the chart at a time, bird first, then reptile. Ask your child which babies need more help and why. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Compare hard robin eggs kept warm in a nest with leathery sea turtle eggs buried in sun warmed sand. To hatch means to break out of an egg. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, turn the page, fill in the compare chart and answer the questions. On page 2: Fill in boxes 1 to 6 of the compare chart with words from the passage. Then, circle the letter of the best answer for question 7 and write the answers to questions 8 and 9 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this comparing life cycles worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with comparing life cycles. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How are bird eggs and reptile eggs different?

⌄

A bird egg has a hard shell, and a parent sits on it to keep it warm. Many turtle and snake eggs have a soft, leathery shell and are buried and left, so sand heated by the sun keeps them warm. Baby sea turtles dig out and crawl to the sea on their own.

Which standard do these pages support?

⌄

NGSS 3-LS1-1, which asks children to show that living things have different life cycles, but all are born, grow, reproduce and die.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. Both comparing life cycles sheets have an answer key.
