Traits Puppies Get From Their Parents, Read and Answer
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Traits Puppies Get From Their Parents, Read and Answer" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers NGSS 3-LS3-1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on living things, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and inherited traits never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this inherited traits worksheet?
⌄
Talk about traits your child shares with family members, then about things that change with food or care. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Read about traits puppies inherit from their parents, study the diagram and answer questions. A trait is a feature of a living thing. An inherited trait is passed from parents to young. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then, study the labeled diagram. Use both to answer the questions on the next page. On page 2: Read each question. Circle the letter of the best answer, or write your answer on the lines. Use the passage and the diagram to help you. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.
Can I use this inherited traits worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade living things, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with inherited traits. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does inherited traits teach third graders?
⌄
It teaches that living things get many of their features from their parents, which is why offspring resemble the adults they came from. Third graders practise naming inherited traits such as fur colour, ear shape, or the colour of a flower. The idea prepares them for later work on variation and heredity.
When do third graders learn about inherited traits?
⌄
This is a Grade 3 life science topic, normally taught just before or alongside acquired traits so the contrast is clear. Children ages 8-9 can already spot family resemblance, so the lesson gives a name to something they have noticed for years. It leads naturally into how inherited differences help animals survive.
How can I use these worksheets at home?
⌄
Look at family photos together and ask your child which features show up in more than one generation. Pets and houseplants work just as well if photos are awkward. Connecting the worksheet to faces your child knows makes the concept concrete rather than abstract.
How many 3rd Grade inherited traits worksheets are there?
⌄
5 printable worksheets, all free to preview. Downloads are included with a ClassWeekly free trial, and every page prints on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
What age are inherited traits worksheets for?
⌄
These are written for 3rd Grade students, roughly ages 8-9. Many teachers also use them a grade up for review or a grade down as an extension, so use the preview to judge the fit for a particular child.
Are these inherited traits worksheets aligned to NGSS?
⌄
Yes. Each one shows the NGSS code it covers on its own page, so you can check the alignment yourself rather than taking our word for it.
