Split Words With Er, Est, Ful and Less

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Split Words With Er, Est, Ful and Less" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RF.2.3.D. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on affixes and compound words, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and suffixes never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this suffixes worksheet?

⌄

Have your child cover the suffix with a finger to find the base word first. Keep the meanings full of, without, more and most in view while working. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Circle the base word and underline er, est, ful or less in 12 words like helpful and softest. A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word, the word you start with. It changes the meaning or use. The directions on the page read: Look at the word on each card. Circle the base word. Then, underline the suffix. An answer key is included.

Can I use this suffixes worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade affixes and compound words, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with suffixes. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a base word?

⌄

The word you start with before adding a suffix, like help in helpful or rest in rested. Finding it first makes a long word easier to read and spell.

What do ful, less, er and est mean?

⌄

Ful means full of, less means without, er means more and est means most. So spotless means without spots and louder means more loud, two of the words children explain on the matching page.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 7 2nd grade suffixes sheets have an answer key.
