Write a Letter to a Pen Pal in Another State

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Write a Letter to a Pen Pal in Another State" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.2. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and letter writing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this letter writing worksheet?

⌄

Read the model letter aloud and point to each labeled part. Talk about who will get the letter and what they would like to hear, then write the date, greeting, body, closing and signature in order. Mail or hand deliver the finished letter if you can.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a made-up letter about camping by a lake, then write a pen pal 3 facts about where you live with a greeting and closing. A friendly letter has a date, a greeting (Dear Sam,), a body with your news, a closing (Love,) and a signature, your name. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and the topic. Then, write the date and a greeting. Then, write 3 sentences in the body. Then, write a closing and sign your name.

Can I use this letter writing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with letter writing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are the five parts of a friendly letter?

⌄

The date, the greeting (Dear Sam,), the body with your news, the closing (Love, or Your friend,) and the signature, which is your name. Every writing frame on these sheets labels all five parts.

Where do the commas go in a friendly letter?

⌄

After the greeting and after the closing, as in Dear Kim, and Your friend, with one more between the day and the year in the date. Match Each Part of a Friendly Letter to Its Job asks children to write a greeting and a closing with a comma (L.2.2.B).

What should a 2nd grader write in the body of a letter?

⌄

Three sentences is the target on these pages. A thank you letter says what the gift was and how you use it, a pen pal letter gives three facts about where you live, and a letter to a teacher gives two reasons.

Do the letter writing worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Only the letter parts matching sheet has one. The five letter writing sheets have no key, since each child writes their own letter. Check that all five parts are there and that the body has three sentences.
