Tell About a Time I Was Proud of a Friend

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Tell About a Time I Was Proud of a Friend" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core W.2.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and personal narratives never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this personal narratives worksheet?

⌄

Read the model aloud and ask your child to tell their own story out loud before writing. Fill in the planner in short notes, then write full sentences with a time-order word at the start of each part. Read the story back together and tick the checklist.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read a made-up model about a kite on a windy day, then plan who, where and how you felt about a friend you were proud of. A personal narrative is a true story about something that happened to you. A time-order word, like first or next, tells when each part happened. The directions on the page read: Read the Model and the topic. Then, write 2 lines in each box, from Who to Closing sentence. Then, use your plan to write your story on lined paper.

Can I use this personal narratives worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade writing, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with personal narratives. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a personal narrative?

⌄

A personal narrative is a true story about something that happened to the writer, told with I and me. In 2nd grade it tells one small event in order, with details and how the writer felt (W.2.3).

What are time-order words?

⌄

Words like first, next, then, after that and finally tell when each part happened. Every sheet prints them at the top, and the checklist on page two asks, I used a time-order word.

What does zoom in on the big moment mean?

⌄

It means slowing the story down at its most important part. On Write About a Time I Had to Wait and Write About a Parade I Watched, children write what they saw, heard and felt at that moment, after a model about a lost mitten at the rink or a first pair of glasses.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

No. Each child tells a true story from their own life. Check that it stays in order, uses a time-order word and tells how your child felt, as the checklist asks.
