FAQ
How do I use this spelling crosswords worksheet?
⌄
Read the rule above the grid together, then have your child sort the word bank by ending before starting. Fill the sure answers first and use the crossing letters for the rest. Check with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Solve a homophone crossword where each clue picks the spelling, like principal, stationery and hoarse. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. The clue tells you which one to write. The directions on the page read: Read each Across and Down clue. Then, find the answer in the word bank and write it in the boxes that start at the clue's number, one letter in each box. An answer key is included.
Can I use this spelling crosswords worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 5th Grade spelling, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with spelling crosswords. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What is a spelling crossword?
⌄
It is a crossword built from one spelling list. Each clue is a short definition, the child finds the word in the word bank and writes it in the numbered boxes, one letter in each box.
How do crosswords help with endings like able and ible?
⌄
Endings like able and ible or ance and ence sound almost the same, so the child has to remember each spelling. In a crossword the crossing word checks the letter, so a word like visible or distance is spelled the right way (CCSS L.5.2.E).
How does the homophone crossword work?
⌄
Each clue tells which meaning to write. The leader of a school is principal, paper and envelopes for writing letters is stationery, and a rough, croaky voice is hoarse.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 6 spelling crosswords have an answer key with every box filled in.
