Ages 10-11 · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

These myths, fables and folktales worksheets for 5th grade ask children to find the lesson of a traditional style tale and the details that show it (CCSS RL.5.2). Children read original tales about Spider winning the world's stories from Sky Chief, Coyote outwitted by Crow, how Giraffe got her long neck, two brothers who share a field and a farmer who frees a talking fish. Two myth pages, on why the seasons change and where thunder comes from, have children find a detail for each feature of a myth, and two pages compare two tellings, two wise judges or a myth and a fable about pride (RL.5.9). Nine original sheets, each with an answer key.

Frequently Asked Questions

A myth explains something in nature, often with spirits or magic beings, like the Sun Spirit who brings the seasons. A fable is a short tale, often with talking animals, that ends in a lesson, like the proud Rooster who thinks his crowing makes the sun rise. A folktale is a story passed down by people over time, like a trickster tale about Spider or Coyote.
