Ages 5-6 · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

Reading fluency is reading smoothly, at a good pace and with expression, and young readers build it by rereading the same short text. These reading fluency worksheets for kindergarten hold 12 sheets, each with an answer key. Six story pages, like The Red Hen and My Pet Fish, have a 4 line story that an adult reads aloud first and the child then reads with the adult 3 times, coloring a star for each read while the adult writes how many words were read. Six build a sentence pages grow sentences like The dog can run fast one word per line for the child to read with an adult. Every sheet also has the child trace and copy a sentence and circle the answer to a question the adult reads aloud (CCSS RF.K.4).

Frequently Asked Questions

Reading fluency is reading smoothly and with expression instead of one slow word at a time. In kindergarten it grows from rereading the same few sentences with an adult, which is what CCSS RF.K.4 asks: reading emergent reader texts with purpose and understanding.
