Build and Read Sentences About a Cake

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Build and Read Sentences About a Cake" is written for Kindergarten (Ages 5-6), and it covers Common Core RF.K.4. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on reading comprehension, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reading fluency never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this reading fluency worksheet?

⌄

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read stacks that build Mom and I bake a cake and The cake is for Dad, then trace and copy both. The directions on the page read: An adult reads each line first. Then, read each line with an adult. Read the whole stack 3 times and color a star each time. On page 2: An adult reads the sentence aloud. Then, trace and copy it. On page 3: An adult reads the sentence and both questions aloud. Then, trace and copy the sentence. Listen to each question and circle the answer. The answer key covers the questions on pages 2 and 3.

Can I use this reading fluency worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for Kindergarten reading comprehension, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reading fluency. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is reading fluency in kindergarten?

⌄

Reading fluency is reading smoothly and with expression instead of one slow word at a time. In kindergarten it grows from rereading the same few sentences with an adult, which is what CCSS RF.K.4 asks: reading emergent reader texts with purpose and understanding.

Why read the same story 3 times?

⌄

Each reread makes the words more familiar, so the reading gets smoother and the child can think about what the story says. The story pages have 3 stars to color, one for each read, gray numbers that count the words to the end of each line and a Words read box the adult fills in.

How do the build a sentence pages work?

⌄

Each stack adds one word per line, from The to The dog can run fast. The adult reads each line first and the child reads it with the adult, then they read the whole stack 3 times. Hearing the sentence grow shows how words join into one smooth sentence.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 12 reading fluency sheets have an answer key that shows the traced sentences and the circled answers.
