2nd Grade Veterans Day Reading Passage
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"2nd Grade Veterans Day Reading Passage" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core RI.2.1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on comprehension exercises, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and reading for the 5ws never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

2nd grade reading worksheet: read a passage about veterans and the six military branches, then answer 3 multiple choice questions. Answer key included. Part of our reading for the 5ws comprehension exercises collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

FAQ
How do I use this reading for the 5ws worksheet?
⌄
Print the page and read the directions with your child: Read the passage. Then fill in the bubble for each answer. When they finish, check the work together with the answer key.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
A four-paragraph passage, Thank You for Your Service, explains that Veterans Day is November 11, names the six branches of the military (the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard and the Space Force) and tells how towns hold parades and students write letters or make cards. Three multiple choice questions ask how many branches there are, which one is a branch of the military and how some students thank veterans. The directions on the page read: Read the passage. Then fill in the bubble for each answer. An answer key is included.
Can I use this reading for the 5ws worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with reading for the 5ws. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
Why do news stories use the 5 W's?
⌄
A news story tells who, what, where, when and why near the top so readers get the facts fast. In Find the Five W's in the Seed Library News, Ms. Patel opened a seed library at the Pine Hill Library last Saturday to help families grow gardens.
Do children write or circle the answers?
⌄
On the three news and story sheets they write, and on the Veterans Day passage they fill in a bubble. Each chart row asks a W question, such as Where was the party?, and children write a short answer from the story, like in the gym.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 5 sheets have an answer key.
What reading comprehension skills do 2nd graders learn?
⌄
They ask and answer who, what, where, when and why questions (CCSS RL.2.1, RI.2.1), describe how characters respond to events (RL.2.3), tell how a story begins and ends (RL.2.5), find the main topic of a passage (RI.2.2), connect causes and effects (RI.2.3) and name an author's purpose (RI.2.6).
Should 2nd graders look back at the passage to answer?
⌄
Yes. Many sheets print the passage on page 1 and the questions on page 2, and their answer keys point to the paragraph that holds each answer. Going back to find proof is a reading skill to practice, not cheating.
Do these sheets use stories or nonfiction?
⌄
Both. Nonfiction sheets include Main Idea and Details About Owls, Cause and Effect When Snow Melts in Spring and Fact or Opinion About Dolphins. Stories include Plot of the Wagon Race Story and Characters at the Chess Club.
