Compare Two Texts About Puffins and Penguins

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Compare Two Texts About Puffins and Penguins" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RI.3.9. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on compare and contrast, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and compare two texts never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this compare two texts worksheet?

⌄

Read Text A, then Text B, and ask your child what new thing they learned from the second text. Use the chart or Venn diagram to compare. Check with the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Fill in a Venn diagram from two texts about puffins and penguins, then tell how the seabirds differ. To compare two texts is to find what they both tell. To contrast them is to find what only one tells. The directions on the page read: Read Text A and Text B. Both are about seabirds. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Write one fact on each line of the Venn diagram. Then, circle the letter of the best answer for 2 and 3. Then, write your answer to 4 on the lines. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this compare two texts worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade compare and contrast, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with compare two texts. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a key point?

⌄

A key point is an important fact in a text. Two texts on the same topic often give different key points, like one text about how hummingbirds eat and another about where they nest.

Why compare two texts on the same topic?

⌄

It shows children that no single text tells everything. Finding what both texts say and what only one says is the RI.3.9 skill.

How does the Venn diagram work?

⌄

Facts found in both texts go in the middle, where the circles overlap, and facts from only one text go in that text's outside part. In the puffins and penguins pair, black and white goes in the middle, can fly goes under puffins and cannot fly goes under penguins.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 7 sheets have an answer key, with sample key points and Venn diagram facts.
