You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and author's purpose worksheets never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

3rd grade reading worksheet: sort 6 short texts like a cereal box ad, a joke and an owl fact card as persuade, inform or entertain. Answer key included. Part of our author's purpose worksheets comprehension exercises collection.
How do I use this worksheet?
Begin with a shared reading or oral warm-up that highlights author's purpose worksheets so students hear and see the skill in context before practicing it independently. Have students work through it independently, using a partner or small group only if they want to talk through their thinking, especially for phonics-based tasks where saying an answer aloud first helps. After completing the worksheet, use one or two examples from the page to start a discussion: "Where else have you seen this in your reading?" These author's purpose worksheets worksheets are ideal for use during small group reading time, as independent center work, or as a homework activity.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Sort 6 short texts like a cereal box ad, a joke and an owl fact card as persuade, inform or entertain. An author's purpose is why an author writes: to persuade (P), to inform (I) or to entertain (E). Cards 1, 2, 5 and 6 are made up. The directions on the page read: Write P, I or E in the box on cards 1 to 6. Use each letter 2 times. Then, answer question 7. An answer key is included.
Can I use this author's purpose worksheets worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade comprehension exercises, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with author's purpose worksheets. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What are the three kinds of author's purpose?
⌄
Persuade means to get you to do or believe something, inform means to teach facts and entertain means to tell a story or make you laugh. In the water texts, We should bring a bottle we can refill persuades, the sea turtle text informs and Carl the camel's story entertains.
How can my child tell which purpose a text has?
⌄
Look for clue words. Words like should, best, please and join point to persuade, facts and numbers point to inform, and made up characters or jokes point to entertain. The sort pages ask children to write the clue word, like tastiest on a cereal box.
Is there an answer key for each worksheet?
⌄
Yes. All 5 author's purpose sheets have an answer key, with sample details where answers will vary.
