How Two Characters Solve a Problem in a Treehouse Story

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"How Two Characters Solve a Problem in a Treehouse Story" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core RL.3.3. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on story elements, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and character analysis never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this character analysis worksheet?

⌄

Read the story together, then ask your child what kind of person the main character is before starting the chart. Have your child find each quote in the story by its paragraph number. Use the other accepted answers in the key, since more than one trait word can be right.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Read about two cousins who both want the treehouse and compare how Ben and Rosa solve the problem. A problem is something that goes wrong for the characters. How each character acts helps you see what that character is like. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then, turn the page and answer the questions. On page 2: Use the story. Fill in chart boxes 1 to 6. Then, circle the best answer to questions 7 and 8. Then, answer question 9 on the 4 lines with two details. The answer key covers the questions on page 2.

Can I use this character analysis worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade story elements, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with character analysis. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is a character trait?

⌄

A character trait is what a character is like inside, such as brave, patient or kind. It stays the same most of the time, unlike a feeling, which changes from moment to moment. Each sheet starts with a short box that explains the idea it practices.

What kinds of character questions are on these sheets?

⌄

Each sheet focuses on one way to learn about a character: actions, dialogue, thoughts, choices, what other characters say, what the character wants, why the character acts, how the character reacts to a problem or how the character changes. One sheet asks for the main and minor characters in a story about an orchard trip.

How can I help my child back up an answer?

⌄

Ask your child to point to the sentence in the story that shows the answer. Several charts already give a quote and its paragraph number, and the last question on every sheet asks for two details from the story.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 16 character analysis sheets have an answer key, and so do the 8 character traits sheets listed with them. The key gives a sample answer for each chart row and lists other answers to accept, since more than one trait word can fit.

What story elements do 3rd graders work on?

⌄

Third graders describe characters, including their traits, wants and feelings, and explain how their actions move the story along (CCSS RL.3.3). They also name the characters, setting, problem and solution and put the main events in order. This topic has character analysis sheets for the first part and story map sheets for the second.

How can I help my child describe a character?

⌄

Ask what the character did or said, then ask what kind of person would do that. Many charts give the quote and its paragraph number, so your child can focus on choosing a trait word like careful, patient or kind. For the last question, have your child point to two sentences in the story before writing.

What is the difference between a story map and a beginning, middle and end chart?

⌄

A story map has four boxes for the characters, setting, problem and solution. A beginning, middle and end chart asks what happens in each part of the story. Both kinds of sheets then have children number four or five events in story order.

Do the 3rd grade story elements worksheets have answer keys?

⌄

Yes. All 24 sheets have an answer key, with a sample answer for each box and for the written question. The key also lists other answers to accept, since more than one trait word or detail can fit.
