Ages 9-10 · Free previews · Print-ready PDFs

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

These myths, fables and folktales worksheets for 4th grade show how traditional tales teach a lesson (CCSS RL.4.2). Children read original tales: Hare outwitting a greedy lion who guards the last pool of water, a rooster who tricks a sly fox, a boastful peacock and a gray crane, myths about why the sea is salty and how the moon got its glow, and a pourquoi tale about why Turtle walks so slowly. Charts track the problem, the trick and the ending, or the features of a myth, and each sheet ends with the lesson and a detail that shows it. One sheet compares two tellings of a magic porridge pot folktale (RL.4.9). Seven original sheets, each with an answer key.

Frequently Asked Questions

A folktale is an old story told aloud, so it can change a little in each telling. A myth often explains something in nature, like why the sea is salty. A fable is a short tale, often with talking animals, that teaches a lesson, like the peacock who learns that looks are not what matter most.
