Suffixes That Make Nouns
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Suffixes That Make Nouns" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.4.B. If your student is a year younger but already steady on prefixes & suffixes, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and prefixes and suffixes never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade grammar worksheet: add noun suffixes like ment, ness and ity to 14 words such as secure and perform, then write 4 sentences. Answer key included. Part of our prefixes and suffixes collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

⌄
Teach the prefix sheets first, then the suffix sheets, and point out the spelling help boxes. Prefix, Root and Suffix Breakdown works as a closing check because it uses every part at once.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Add noun suffixes like ment, ness and ity to 14 words such as secure and perform, then write 4 sentences. A noun suffix turns a verb or an adjective into a noun, a word that names a person, place, thing or idea. The directions on the page read: In Part A, add -ment, -ness, -ity, -tion or -ance to change each word into a noun, and write the noun on the line. In Part B, write a sentence that uses the noun you made in each item named. An answer key is included.
Can I use this prefixes and suffixes worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade prefixes & suffixes, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with prefixes and suffixes. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does the prefix inter mean?
⌄
Inter means between, so an intersection is a place where roads cross and an intercity train runs between cities. Prefixes Pre, Post, Inter and Trans practices it along with pre, post and trans.
Which noun suffixes are on the worksheets?
⌄
Suffixes That Make Nouns uses ment, ness, ity, tion and ance, as in enjoyment, darkness, equality, protection and allowance. Students then write 4 sentences with nouns they made.
How do you split a word into prefix, root and suffix?
⌄
Find the prefix at the front, the suffix at the end and the root in the middle. Prefix, Root and Suffix Breakdown splits incredible into in, cred and ible, then asks for the meaning.
