Put a Friendly Letter in Order

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Put a Friendly Letter in Order" is written for 3rd Grade (Ages 8-9), and it covers Common Core W.3.4. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on writing topics, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and friendly letters never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this friendly letters worksheet?

⌄

Start with the labeling page so the 5 parts have names, then move to the order page. On the two writing pages, fill in the plan first and use the checklist on page 2 before you check the sample letter in the answer key.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Number the 5 parts of Theo's letter to Grandpa in order, then put 3 soccer goal sentences in time order. A friendly letter has 5 parts in this order: date, greeting, body, closing and signature. The directions on the page read: Number Part A from 1 to 5 in the order the parts go in a letter, top to bottom. Then, number Part B in time order. Then, write a new closing in Part C. An answer key is included.

Can I use this friendly letters worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 3rd Grade writing topics, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with friendly letters. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What are the 5 parts of a friendly letter?

⌄

The date at the top, the greeting, like Dear Kai, the body with the news, the closing, like Your friend, and the signature, which is the writer's name. A comma follows the greeting and the closing.

How is a friendly letter different from a formal letter?

⌄

A friendly letter goes to someone you know, like a grandparent or a pen pal, and uses everyday words. A formal letter goes to a business or someone you do not know and uses more careful, polite words.

How do I help my child write a reply to a letter?

⌄

Read the letter together and underline each question the writer asks. Plan an answer to each one, add a question back, then write the reply with all 5 parts. The page with Nora's letter from camp sets out these steps.

Is there an answer key for each worksheet?

⌄

Yes. All 4 friendly letter sheets have an answer key. The writing pages show a sample letter to compare with.
