Check Solutions to Equations by Substitution

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Check Solutions to Equations by Substitution" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.EE.B.5. If your student is a year younger but already steady on algebra, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and one-step equations never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Check Solutions to Equations by Substitution
Check Solutions to Equations by Substitution

6th grade math worksheet: check if values like x = 6 solve equations like 4x minus 5 = 19 by substitution. Answer key included. Part of our one-step equations algebra collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Begin with the expression, equation or inequality sort and the substitution page. Then solve the equation pages, and finish with the two word problem pages.

What students will practice

  • Students will substitute a given value into each of 12 equations and find the left side.
  • Students will decide yes or no, such as whether m = 9 solves 50 minus m = 39.
  • Students will check equations with decimals and powers, such as 4b = 6 when b = 1.5.

FAQ

How do I use this one-step equations worksheet?

⌄

Begin with the expression, equation or inequality sort and the substitution page. Then solve the equation pages, and finish with the two word problem pages.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Check if values like x = 6 solve equations like 4x minus 5 = 19 by substitution. A value is a solution when substituting it makes both sides equal: k = 3 solves k + 4 = 7 because 3 + 4 = 7. The directions on the page read: Put the value into the left side and find its value. Write yes if it equals the right side, or no if it does not. An answer key is included.

Can I use this one-step equations worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade algebra, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with one-step equations. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you solve a one-step equation?

⌄

Undo the operation on the variable by doing the inverse to both sides. For n divided by 3 = 6, multiply both sides by 3 to get n = 18. For 0.5z = 8, divide both sides by 0.5 to get z = 16.

How do you check a solution?

⌄

Put the value back into the equation and see if both sides are equal. x = 6 solves 4x minus 5 = 19 because 4 x 6 minus 5 is 19. m = 9 does not solve 50 minus m = 39 because 50 minus 9 is 41.

Are there word problems?

⌄

Yes. Two pages have word problems. Students write an equation such as 4.50t = 18.00 for play tickets, solve it and give the answer with units, here 4 tickets.

Is there an answer key?

⌄

Yes. All 6 one-step equations worksheets have an answer key.
