Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Decimals Times 10 and 100" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.NS.B.3. FAQ

How do I use this multiply decimals by powers of 10 worksheet?

⌄

Have students say how many places the point moves before they write each answer. Use the missing factor sheets after students can multiply by powers of 10 quickly.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Multiply 24 decimals by 10 or 100, like 3.316 × 100 and 0.055 × 10, moving the decimal point. Multiplying by 10 moves the decimal point one place to the right; multiplying by 100 moves it two places: 5.82 × 10 = 58.2. The directions on the page read: Multiply. Write each product. An answer key is included.

Can I use this multiply decimals by powers of 10 worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade decimal multiplication, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with multiply decimals by powers of 10. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the rule for multiplying decimals by powers of 10?

⌄

Move the decimal point one place to the right for each zero in the power of 10. On Decimals Times 10 and 100, 5.82 × 10 = 58.2, and 0.8 × 100 = 80.

How do you find a missing power of 10?

⌄

Compare the two numbers and count how many places the point moved. On Missing Factors With 10, 100 or 1,000, 40.5 times a number equals 40,500, so the point moved 3 places and the missing factor is 1,000.

How is multiplying by a power of 10 different from dividing by one?

⌄

Multiplying moves the point to the right and makes the number larger. Dividing moves it to the left. Multiply and Divide Decimals by Powers of 10 mixes both, such as 6.093 × 100 = 609.3 and 2.18 ÷ 1,000 = 0.00218.
