Add Fractions to Mixed Numbers
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Add Fractions to Mixed Numbers" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 5.NF.A.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on fraction addition & subtraction, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and add mixed numbers (unlike denominators) never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: add a fraction to a mixed number in 12 problems like 4 4/9 + 3/4, regrouping when the fraction passes 1. Answer key included. Part of our add mixed numbers (unlike denominators) fraction addition & subtraction collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Use Add Fractions to Mixed Numbers first, then the unlike denominators page, then the to 30 and to 60 pages. The to 60 page leaves space under each problem.
What students will practice
- Students will add 12 fractions to mixed numbers, such as 1 1/4 + 1/3 = 1 7/12.
- Students will regroup when the fraction part is more than 1, as in 2 11/12 + 1/8 = 3 1/24.
- Students will simplify sums like 6 1/2 + 13/14 = 7 3/7.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Add a fraction to a mixed number in 12 problems like 4 4/9 + 3/4, regrouping when the fraction passes 1. The directions on the page read: Add. Regroup when the fraction part is more than 1. Write each answer in simplest form. An answer key is included.
Can I use this add mixed numbers (unlike denominators) worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade fraction addition & subtraction, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with add mixed numbers (unlike denominators). In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you add mixed numbers with unlike denominators?
⌄
Rename the fraction parts with a common denominator, add the fractions, then add the whole numbers. Regroup if the fraction part is more than 1, as in 4 5/12 + 7 3/4 = 12 1/6.
What does regrouping mean when adding mixed numbers?

When the fraction parts add to more than 1, move one whole into the whole number part. For 2 11/12 + 1/8, the sum is 3 1/24.
