Write Percents as Fractions in Simplest Form

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Write Percents as Fractions in Simplest Form" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.RP.A.3.C. If your student is a year younger but already steady on percents, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and fractions, decimals and percents never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this fractions, decimals and percents worksheet?

⌄

Use the percents and decimals page first, since moving the decimal point is the quickest skill. Finish with the table page as a review that mixes all three forms.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Write 16 percents like 35% and 240% as fractions or mixed numbers in simplest form. A percent is a fraction out of 100. Write it over 100, then simplify: 45% = 45 100 = 9 20. The directions on the page read: Write each percent as a fraction or mixed number in simplest form. For 13 to 16, also write the decimal. An answer key is included.

Can I use this fractions, decimals and percents worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade percents, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with fractions, decimals and percents. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you change a percent to a decimal?

⌄

Move the decimal point 2 places to the left, so 48% = 0.48 and 7.5% = 0.075. To change a decimal to a percent, move it 2 places to the right, so 0.375 = 37.5%.

How do you write a percent as a fraction in simplest form?

⌄

Write the percent over 100 and simplify. 45% = 45/100 = 9/20, and 125% = 1 1/4.

What happens with percents over 100% or under 1%?

⌄

A percent over 100% is a decimal greater than 1, and a percent under 1% is a decimal less than 0.01. 230% = 2.3 and 0.7% = 0.007.
