Which Detail Supports the Central Idea?

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Which Detail Supports the Central Idea?" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core RI.6.2. If your student is a year younger but already steady on main idea and details, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and main idea never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this main idea worksheet?

⌄

Start with Which Detail Supports the Central Idea? for quick practice, then move to the full articles. Ask students to explain why each wrong choice is too narrow or off topic.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Choose the detail that supports 3 central ideas, like the Sahara, then write details for 2 more. A supporting detail is a fact or example that proves or explains the central idea. The directions on the page read: For items 1 to 3, circle the letter of the detail that best supports the central idea. For items 4 and 5, write your own supporting detail as a complete sentence. An answer key is included.

Can I use this main idea worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade main idea and details, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with main idea. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you find the central idea of an article?

⌄

Ask what the whole article is mostly about, then check that most details support it. In Find the Central Idea of an Article, the octopus article is about how octopuses solve problems, not just about opening jars.

What is a supporting detail?

⌄

A fact or example that proves or explains the central idea. Which Detail Supports the Central Idea? has students reject true details that do not help, like where the Sahara is.

Why do some answer choices sound right but are wrong?

⌄

Some choices are only one detail, such as some octopuses open jars, or a fact that is true but too narrow. The central idea must cover the whole article.
