Academic Words for Science
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Academic Words for Science" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.6. If your student is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and academic vocabulary never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this academic vocabulary worksheet?
⌄
Use the test question sheet before a reading test. Pair the science and social studies sheets with those classes so the words show up again.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Match 12 science words like hypothesis and variable, then complete a lab report on salt water. The directions on the page read: In Part A, write the letter of the meaning next to each science word. In Part B, fill in each blank in the lab report with a word from Part A. You may add -s to a word. An answer key is included.
Can I use this academic vocabulary worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade academic vocabulary, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does infer mean in a test question?
⌄
Infer means to figure out from clues and what you know. Academic Words in Test Questions asks students to restate a question about why Mia left the party early in plain words.
What is a control in an experiment?
⌄
A control is the unchanged part of a test, used for comparison. In the lab report on Academic Words for Science, the cup of plain water is the control.
Do students use every word?
⌄
On the science and social studies sheets, Part B does not use every word from Part A, so students must choose. The test question sheet uses every word once in Part A.
