Pick the Best Definition With Context Clues
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Pick the Best Definition With Context Clues" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.4.A. If your student is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and context clues never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade vocabulary worksheet: circle the right definition for 12 bold words like arid, evacuate and incessant from 4 choices. Answer key included. Part of our context clues collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Teach one clue type per sheet, then use Name the Context Clue Type to mix them. Save the two passage sheets for last, since students must find the clue on their own in a longer text.
What students will practice
- Students will pick the meaning that fits from 4 choices for each of 12 bold words.
- Students will use sentence details, such as fields that cracked and turned to dust, to define arid.
- Students will reject meanings that do not fit, as with refrain read as a song's chorus.

FAQ
How do I use this context clues worksheet?
⌄
Teach one clue type per sheet, then use Name the Context Clue Type to mix them. Save the two passage sheets for last, since students must find the clue on their own in a longer text.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle the right definition for 12 bold words like arid, evacuate and incessant from 4 choices. Context clues are the words and ideas around a new word that help you choose which meaning fits. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Use the clues around the word in bold to choose its meaning. Circle the definition that fits the sentence. An answer key is included.
Can I use this context clues worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade context clues, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you find a definition clue?
⌄
Look for words right after the hard word that explain it, often after that is, or or which means. In Definition and Restatement Clues, a nocturnal animal is one that sleeps during the day and is active at night.
What is a contrast clue?
⌄
A contrast clue shows what a word does not mean. In Antonym and Contrast Clues, the puzzle looked intricate, but it was simple, so intricate means complicated.
How many words does each sheet practice?
⌄
Most sheets have 10 or 12 sentences. The two passage sheets each have 6 bold words, with the questions on a second page.
