Than or Then, Accept or Except
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Than or Then, Accept or Except" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.2.B. If your student is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and homophones never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this homophones worksheet?
⌄
Read the rule box aloud before each sheet. Have students explain their choice by pointing to a clue word in the sentence.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Circle than or then and accept or except in 14 sentences, like Jupiter is much larger than Earth. Some word pairs look and sound alike, so check the meaning of each one before you choose. The directions on the page read: Read each sentence. Circle the word in parentheses that completes it correctly. An answer key is included.
Can I use this homophones worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade homophones, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you remember affect and effect?
⌄
Affect is usually a verb that means to change, and effect is usually a noun that means a result. The special effects in the movie looked real uses the noun.
How do you tell lose from loose?
⌄
Lose rhymes with shoes and means to misplace or not win. Loose rhymes with goose and means not tight, as in This tooth is loose.
What does except mean?
⌄
Except means but or leaving out, as in The library is open every day except Sunday. Accept means to take or agree to.
