Edit a Letter for Grammar and Punctuation

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Edit a Letter for Grammar and Punctuation" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.1. If your student is a year younger but already steady on writing process, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and editing never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this editing worksheet?

⌄

Use each editing sheet after the matching grammar lesson, such as pronoun case or commas. The CUPS checklist can then guide students as they edit their own drafts.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Find 12 errors in Nadia's letter to the Cedar Hill Town Council asking for a bike lane. Proofread for verb agreement, pronouns, words that sound alike, apostrophes, capital letters and end marks. The directions on the page read: Nadia's letter has 12 errors in grammar, spelling, capital letters and punctuation. Find each one and fix it with the editing marks in the box. An answer key is included.

Can I use this editing worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade writing process, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with editing. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the CUPS checklist?

⌄

CUPS stands for capitals, usage, punctuation and spelling. Editing Checklist and Practice has students find 10 errors in Cleanup Day at Riverside Park and sort each one by its CUPS letter.

How many errors are in each editing paragraph?

⌄

The sheets tell students how many to find: 8 pronoun errors in The Windy Hike, 10 comma errors in The Cup-Stacking Robot, 12 errors in Nadia's letter and 10 in the CUPS paragraph.

Do students rewrite the paragraph?

⌄

On Edit a Paragraph for Run-Ons and Fragments, yes. Students label 11 word groups in The Night Market and then rewrite the paragraph with 3 run-ons and 3 fragments fixed.
