Sentence Variety Makeover
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Sentence Variety Makeover" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core L.6.3.A. If your student is a year younger but already steady on writing process, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and revising never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Rewrite a choppy 10-sentence storm paragraph with simple, compound and complex sentences. The directions on the page read: Read the box. In Part A, read the paragraph and fill in the two blanks. In Part B, rewrite the paragraph so the sentences have different lengths and types. In Part C, count each type you used. An answer key is included.
Can I use this revising worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade writing process, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with revising. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What do students check when they revise an essay?
⌄
Essay Revising Checklist uses six checks: ideas, order, evidence, transitions, word choice and ending. Students find the one sentence in a 12-sentence draft that fails each check.
How do you fix choppy sentences?
⌄
Combine some short sentences into compound and complex ones. Sentence Variety Makeover starts with 10 simple sentences about a storm and asks for a rewrite with all three types.
What is two stars and a wish?
⌄
It is a peer feedback format: two strengths with examples and one specific change. Peer Feedback Form for a Narrative also has a four-row rating and a question for the writer.
