What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Divide 24 decimals by powers of 10 up to 1,000,000, like 1.7 ÷ 1,000,000 and 5,607.7 ÷ 100. Dividing by 10, 100, 1,000 and so on moves the decimal point one place to the left for each zero. The directions on the page read: Divide. Write zeros after the point when you need them. An answer key is included.

Can I use this divide by powers of 10 worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade decimal division, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with divide by powers of 10. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What is the rule for dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000?

⌄

Move the decimal point 1, 2 or 3 places to the left. On Divide Whole Numbers by 10, 100 or 1,000, 6,733 ÷ 100 = 67.33. Write zeros in front when you need more places, as in 63 ÷ 1,000 = 0.063.

How do you divide a decimal by 1,000,000?

⌄

Count the 6 zeros and move the point 6 places left, writing zeros after the point. On Divide Decimals by Powers of 10 Up to 1,000,000, 1.7 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.0000017.

How do you find a missing divisor that is a power of 10?

⌄

Count how many places the point moved to the left: 1 place is 10, 2 is 100 and 3 is 1,000. On Missing Numbers When Dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000, 533 divided by a number equals 5.33, so the divisor is 100.
