Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

FAQ

How do I use this long division of decimals worksheet?

⌄

Have students place the point in the quotient before they divide. Use the work space under each bracket and check each answer by multiplying.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Use long division on 6 decimals with 2-digit divisors, like 151.92 ÷ 36 and 20.358 ÷ 39. The directions on the page read: Divide. Show your work. Write zeros after the dividend if you need more places. An answer key is included.

Can I use this long division of decimals worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade decimal division, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with long division of decimals. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

When do you write zeros after the dividend in long division?

⌄

Write a zero when there is a remainder and no digits are left to bring down. On Long Division of Decimals by 1-Digit Numbers, 22.9 ÷ 5 becomes 22.90 ÷ 5 = 4.58.

How do you divide a whole number and get a decimal answer?

⌄

Write a point and zeros after the dividend and keep dividing. On Whole Number Division With Decimal Quotients, 161 ÷ 28 = 5.75, and 85 ÷ 59 does not end, so it rounds to 1.441.

How do you round a quotient to the nearest thousandth?

⌄

Divide to the ten-thousandths place, then look at that digit. On Divide Decimals and Round to Thousandths, 76.2 ÷ 9 = 8.4666, so the quotient rounds up to 8.467.
