Compare Discounts to Find the Better Deal
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Compare Discounts to Find the Better Deal" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.RP.A.3.C. If your student is a year younger but already steady on percents, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and percent word problems never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: compare 2 deals in 6 problems, like 25% off or $15 off a $56.00 lamp, and circle the better deal. Answer key included. Part of our percent word problems percents collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with sales tax and discounts, where students multiply by a percent written as a decimal. Use the original price and percent change pages after that, since they divide instead.
What students will practice
- Students will find the final price under Deal A and Deal B in 6 problems.
- Students will compare a percent off with a dollar amount off, as for $80.00 boots.
- Students will compare two stores with different prices and discounts, such as a $48.00 game at 15% off.

FAQ
How do I use this percent word problems worksheet?
⌄
Start with sales tax and discounts, where students multiply by a percent written as a decimal. Use the original price and percent change pages after that, since they divide instead.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Compare 2 deals in 6 problems, like 25% off or $15 off a $56.00 lamp, and circle the better deal. The directions on the page read: Find the final price for A and for B. Then circle the better deal, the one that costs less. Use the space under each problem for your work. An answer key is included.
Can I use this percent word problems worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade percents, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with percent word problems. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you find the sales tax and total cost?
⌄
Multiply the price by the tax rate written as a decimal, then add. 6% tax on $48.00 is 48.00 × 0.06 = $2.88, so the total is $50.88.
How do you find a sale price after a discount?
⌄
Multiply the price by the percent off and subtract. A $45.00 item at 30% off has a $13.50 discount, so it costs $31.50.
How do you find the original price before a discount?
⌄
Divide the sale price by the percent of the original price that is left. A jacket that costs $42.00 after 30% off is 70% of the original price, so 42.00 ÷ 0.7 = $60.00.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 10 percent word problem sheets have an answer key that shows the work and rounds money to the nearest cent.
