Discount and Sales Tax in One Problem
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Discount and Sales Tax in One Problem" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core 6.RP.A.3.C. If your student is a year younger but already steady on percents, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and percent word problems never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade math worksheet: find the sale price, tax and total for 4 purchases, like a $36.00 shirt at 25% off with 6% tax. Answer key included. Part of our percent word problems percents collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Start with sales tax and discounts, where students multiply by a percent written as a decimal. Use the original price and percent change pages after that, since they divide instead.
What students will practice
- Students will find the sale price first, then the tax on the sale price, in 4 problems.
- Students will use a $10 coupon before adding 8% tax on an $84.50 skateboard.
- Students will round tax to the nearest cent and find totals such as $88.46 for a tent.

FAQ
How do I use this percent word problems worksheet?
⌄
Start with sales tax and discounts, where students multiply by a percent written as a decimal. Use the original price and percent change pages after that, since they divide instead.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Find the sale price, tax and total for 4 purchases, like a $36.00 shirt at 25% off with 6% tax. The directions on the page read: For each problem, find the sale price first. Then find the tax on the sale price and the total. Round the tax to the nearest cent. Show your work under each problem. An answer key is included.
Can I use this percent word problems worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade percents, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with percent word problems. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How do you find the sales tax and total cost?
⌄
Multiply the price by the tax rate written as a decimal, then add. 6% tax on $48.00 is 48.00 × 0.06 = $2.88, so the total is $50.88.
How do you find a sale price after a discount?
⌄
Multiply the price by the percent off and subtract. A $45.00 item at 30% off has a $13.50 discount, so it costs $31.50.
How do you find the original price before a discount?
⌄
Divide the sale price by the percent of the original price that is left. A jacket that costs $42.00 after 30% off is 70% of the original price, so 42.00 ÷ 0.7 = $60.00.
Is there an answer key?
⌄
Yes. All 10 percent word problem sheets have an answer key that shows the work and rounds money to the nearest cent.
