Expand Decimals in Form and Notation

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Expand Decimals in Form and Notation" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on place value & rounding, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and decimals in expanded form never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ

How do I use this decimals in expanded form worksheet?

⌄

Use Expand Decimals in Form and Notation first so students see both forms side by side. Then use Write Decimals From Expanded Form to check that they hold zero places in numbers like 30.000057.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Write 8 decimals like 103.2005 and 6.061005 in expanded form and in expanded notation. Expanded form adds the value of each digit. Expanded notation multiplies each digit by its place value: 4.06 = 4 + 0.06 = 4 × 1 + 6 × 0.01. The directions on the page read: Write each decimal in expanded form and in expanded notation. Skip zero digits. An answer key is included.

Can I use this decimals in expanded form worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade place value & rounding, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with decimals in expanded form. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

How do you write a decimal in expanded form?

⌄

Write the value of each nonzero digit and add them, so 85.72 = 80 + 5 + 0.7 + 0.02. Zero digits are skipped, so 59.00004 = 50 + 9 + 0.00004.

What place values do these decimals use?

⌄

They go from hundreds down to millionths. Write Decimals From Expanded Form includes 2 × 1 + 7 × 0.000001 = 2.000007.

How do students avoid mistakes with zeros?

⌄

Find the smallest place first. In 4 × 0.001 + 9 × 0.0001 the smallest place is ten thousandths, so the answer has four decimal places, 0.0049.
