Compare Two Characters With a Venn Diagram
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Compare Two Characters With a Venn Diagram" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers Common Core RL.6.3. If your student is a year younger but already steady here, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and compare and contrast never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

FAQ
How do I use this compare and contrast worksheet?
⌄
Start with the Venn diagram sheet, then use the chart sheets for longer comparisons. Ask students to back every difference with a detail from each text.
What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
Fill a Venn diagram for Talia and Marco from Opposites on the Trail and explain how each changes. When you compare characters, you tell how they are alike, and when you contrast them, you tell how they are different. The directions on the page read: Read the story. Then complete the Venn diagram and answer the questions on page 2. An answer key is included.
Can I use this compare and contrast worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade compare and contrast, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
How does a Venn diagram help compare characters?
⌄
Each circle holds what is true of only one character, and the middle holds what they share. Talia makes checklists and Marco loves surprises, but both are best friends on the same trip.
What should students compare in a poem and a story?
⌄
The topic, theme, form and feeling. Compare a Poem and a Story uses a chart for The Last Night and The New Street, two texts about moving.
Is a memoir less accurate than a news report?
⌄
Not less accurate, just different in purpose. The memoir in Compare Two Authors on One Event shares one family's feelings, so it leaves out exact times that the news report gives.
