Reflect, Absorb or Transmit Light

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Reflect, Absorb or Transmit Light" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers NGSS MS-PS4-2. If your student is a year younger but already steady on waves and light, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and light and the electromagnetic spectrum never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

6th grade science worksheet: follow light at a mirror and frosted glass, then sort objects as transparent, translucent or opaque. Answer key included. Part of our light and the electromagnetic spectrum collection. Aligned to NGSS standards.

How do I use this worksheet?

Hold a clear, a frosted and a solid object up to a window as students read the three material words. On the spectrum sheet, have students say each wave's use as they label it.

What students will practice

  • Students will define reflected, absorbed, transmitted and refracted light.
  • Students will record what happens to light in transparent, translucent and opaque materials.
  • Students will classify objects such as a brick wall and a shower door by how they transmit light.

FAQ

How do I use this light and the electromagnetic spectrum worksheet?

⌄

Hold a clear, a frosted and a solid object up to a window as students read the three material words. On the spectrum sheet, have students say each wave's use as they label it.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Follow light at a mirror and frosted glass, then sort objects as transparent, translucent or opaque. The directions on the page read: Read the text and study the pictures. Then use the text to fill in the chart. An answer key is included.

Can I use this light and the electromagnetic spectrum worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade waves and light, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with light and the electromagnetic spectrum. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What happens to light when it hits an object?

⌄

It can be reflected, absorbed, transmitted or refracted. A mirror reflects light in a neat pattern, and an object that absorbs light takes in its energy and warms up.

What are the seven types of electromagnetic waves in order?

⌄

From longest wavelength to shortest, they are radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. As the wavelength gets shorter, the frequency and the energy get higher.

What are X-rays used for?

⌄

X-rays pass through skin but are blocked by bone, so doctors use them to take pictures of bones. The Electromagnetic Spectrum also names uses for radio waves, microwaves and gamma rays.
