Confucius and Ancient Chinese Ideas

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Confucius and Ancient Chinese Ideas" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on Ancient History, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and Ancient China never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

How do I use this Ancient China worksheet?

⌄

Complete the dynasty timeline first so later sheets have a time frame. When students read about the Silk Road, have them trace the route with a finger before answering, and use the key to compare their written answers.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Explain filial piety, how Confucius said rulers should lead and how Han officials were chosen. The directions on the page read: Read the text. Then answer the questions on page 2. An answer key is included.

Can I use this Ancient China worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade Ancient History, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with Ancient China. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What were the main dynasties of ancient China?

⌄

The worksheet covers five: Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang. Students write each on a timeline, connect each to a fact such as oracle bones or woodblock printing, and work out from the dates that the Zhou lasted longest.

What was the Silk Road?

⌄

It was a network of trade routes linking China with lands to the west, and it began to grow during the Han dynasty. Few traders traveled the whole way, so goods passed from merchant to merchant, as the map and table on the sheet show.

What did Confucius teach?

⌄

Confucius taught that a well-run society begins with the family and that a ruler should lead by good example, not harsh punishment. His students collected his sayings in a book called the Analects.
