Ancient Egypt Timeline

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ancient Egypt Timeline" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on Ancient History, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and Ancient Egypt never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Ancient Egypt Timeline

6th grade social studies worksheet: place eight events from Egypt's uniting to Cleopatra VII on a timeline and count the years. Answer key included. Part of our Ancient Egypt collection.

How do I use this worksheet?

Start with the map so students know Upper and Lower Egypt, then fill in the social pyramid. Use the timeline last as a review, and ask students to show their subtraction when they count the years between events.

What students will practice

  • Students will match eight events in ancient Egypt to their places on a BCE timeline.
  • Students will calculate years between events, such as Egypt's uniting and Rome taking Egypt.
  • Students will find the two listed events closest in time and tell how many years apart they are.

FAQ

How do I use this Ancient Egypt worksheet?

⌄

Start with the map so students know Upper and Lower Egypt, then fill in the social pyramid. Use the timeline last as a review, and ask students to show their subtraction when they count the years between events.

What does this worksheet teach?

⌄

Place eight events from Egypt's uniting to Cleopatra VII on a timeline and count the years. The directions on the page read: Each box on the timeline marks the date of one event on the list. Write the letter of each event in its box. Then answer the questions. An answer key is included.

Can I use this Ancient Egypt worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade Ancient History, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with Ancient Egypt. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

Why did ancient Egyptians live near the Nile?

⌄

Every summer the Nile flooded and left black mud that made the soil rich, and dry desert lay on both sides of the narrow valley. Students give these reasons on The Nile River and Ancient Egypt and then label a map of the river.

Who built the pyramids of Egypt?

⌄

Pyramids, Pharaohs and Mummies explains that archaeologists found a town for the workers, with bakeries and food storage, and tombs where workers were buried with honor. These finds show the builders were Egyptian workers, and many were farmers working during the flood months.

What are the steps of mummification?

⌄

The sheet gives four steps. Workers removed the brain and most inner organs, covered the body with natron for about 40 days, wrapped it in strips of linen and placed the mummy in a coffin.

How were hieroglyphs finally understood?

⌄

The Rosetta Stone, found in 1799, showed the same message in hieroglyphs, Demotic and Greek. Because scholars could read the Greek, they could work out the hieroglyphs, and Champollion announced the solution in 1822.
