Ancient History Vocabulary

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Ancient History Vocabulary" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12). If your student is a year younger but already steady on Ancient History, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and ancient legacies never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Can I use this ancient legacies worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade Ancient History, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with ancient legacies. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

What did the Greeks and Romans give the world?

⌄

The Greek legacies on the sheet include democracy, juries, the Olympic Games, columns, theater and the Pythagorean theorem. The Roman legacies include the republic, aqueducts, roads, concrete, Latin roots and calendar months.

Why did the first civilizations grow up near rivers?

Rivers gave people water for drinking and for irrigating crops, floods left rich soil on the fields and boats carried goods and people. River Valley Civilizations Compared looks at the Tigris and Euphrates, Nile, Indus and Yellow River.

Which ancient history words should 6th graders know?

⌄

Ancient History Vocabulary covers civilization, city-state, dynasty, empire, republic, democracy, pharaoh, artifact, irrigation, surplus, archaeologist and BCE. Students match each term to a definition and then use terms in sentences.
