Federal, State and Local Government

Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher

"Federal, State and Local Government" is written for 6th Grade (Ages 11-12), and it covers C3 Framework D2.Civ.5.6-8. If your student is a year younger but already steady on Three Branches and Checks, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and the three branches never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Sort 12 services such as printing money and picking up trash by federal, state or local level. The directions on the page read: Read the text. Circle the letter of the best answer to questions 1 and 2. Write your answer to question 3 on the lines. An answer key is included.

Can I use this three branches worksheet for homeschool or classroom?

⌄

Yes, both. We made it for 6th Grade Three Branches and Checks, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with the three branches. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.

The legislative branch, Congress, makes the laws. Congress has two parts, the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Congress makes laws, sets taxes and can declare war. The president signs or vetoes bills and commands the military. The courts hear cases and interpret laws. Sort the Powers by Branch has students place 12 of these powers.

Who leads the federal government, a state and a city?

⌄

The president leads the federal government, a governor leads a state, and a mayor usually leads a city. Federal, State and Local Government has students write in each leader after sorting the services.
